Sun to Market Solutions is a company that designs and sells computer applications for thermal and photovoltaic solar power plants. Given its name, it might seem strange, but the company is based in Leganés, near Madrid, and is the product of Carlos III University. Solar thermal power is produced by using concentration technologies to collect solar radiation. The power plants where the heat is transformed into electricity are made up of two sections: one collects solar energy and transforms it into heat; the second transforms heat into electricity. It would be easy to calculate the amount of energy thus generated and its profitability were it not for the numerous environmental variables (wind speed, humidity, etc.) and regulatory issues (premiums for uploading to the electricity grid at certain times) involved. When building and operating a plant, taking these variables into account can result in significant savings. What Sun to Market Solutions does, therefore, is to optimise solar plant operation and management. Its solution, S2m Solver 1.0, was recently unveiled at the World Future Energy Summit 2010 in Abu Dhabi, the premier world showcase for renewable energy. The founders of Sun to Market are two engineers, Enrique Serrano and Ralf Wiesenberg, who met and started talking about energy?in a taxi cab. From this chance meeting sprang a friendship and a shared professional involvement and the rest, as they say, is history.
